Counter-Strike 2 team size, party size and playing Premier with friends
Last updated 5 November 2026
Valve has never published how far apart CS Ratings can be for friends to queue Premier together, and the 5,000 most pages give isn't what players run into. Players who've been refused since Valve's last change report the limit for a duo at around 9,000, and they report full five-stacks queuing 12,000 apart and more since October 2025. A friend with no rating on screen can still be refused, and players put that down to a hidden rating the game already keeps.
This guide is for a player who wants to play Premier or Competitive with friends of other ratings, or whose friend the game won't queue with. It covers how big a party can be and what each player needs, what each of Valve's error messages means, how far apart ratings can be, friends without a rating, Competitive and Wingman, FACEIT, why it matters who you queue with, and how to find players in range. For ESEA and other games' teams, see every game's team format.
In short
- Counter-Strike 2's Premier and Competitive are five against five, and both take parties of one to five. Parties of four have been allowed in Premier since November 2023.
- Every player in a Premier party needs Prime status, which is bought, and Profile Rank 10. Competitive and Wingman unlock at Profile Rank 2.
- Valve doesn't publish how far apart CS Ratings can be in a Premier party. Players report that a duo is refused at around 9,000 apart, and that since October 2025 a full five-stack can queue further apart than that.
- In Premier, a player with a very high CS Rating can't party with someone who hasn't established one yet. Players also report friends being refused when neither shows a rating.
- In Competitive, a party whose Skill Groups are too far apart can still queue as a full five, and a friend without Prime makes the match Unranked.
Team size and party size
Premier and Competitive are played five against five, and a party can be one to five players. Premier took parties of four from the release notes of 8 November 2023, which also gave "vote-kick immunity for solo players who get matched on the same team with a party of four players". Wingman is two against two, so a player queues it alone or with one friend.
What each player needs comes from the game's own code and text, which SteamDB tracks with every update:
- Premier needs Prime status and Profile Rank 10, the XP rank shown on a player's profile, for every player in the party. By the game's code, a player who has reset their rank for a Service Medal keeps Premier. Prime is bought from the store; a player without it sees "Purchase Prime Account Status, and complete matches in other game modes to unlock this one." Premier also closes between seasons: "Premier season has ended. Please wait until the next Premier season begins."
- Competitive and Wingman unlock earlier, at the second Profile Rank, which the game calls Private Rank 2: "This game mode unlocks when you reach Private Rank 2."
So a friend who has just installed the game plays Casual or Deathmatch with you first, and buys Prime before Premier.
What each message means
When a party's ratings stop it queuing Premier, the game says so in one of three messages, which tell you what to change. They're the client's own text:
| The message says | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "CS Ratings of players in your party are too far apart to participate in matchmaking together." | Too far apart, with no exception for a five | Split up, or play Competitive together |
| "CS Ratings of players in your party are too far apart to participate in matchmaking together unless you play with a full team of five players." | Too far apart for this party, not for a five | Find enough players to make five |
| "CS Ratings of players in your party are too high to participate in matchmaking with a player who does not have an established CS Rating." | Someone has a high rating, and someone has no rating yet | Play Competitive together while the friend wins their Premier matches |
The second message came in with the build of 3 October 2025, an update whose notes don't mention it.
How far apart CS Ratings can be
Valve doesn't say. It has changed who can party in Premier four times, three of them the rating limit, and one of those without a word in its notes:
- Parties of four were allowed into Premier in November 2023.
- The release notes of 6 February 2024 "Adjusted the range of CS Ratings allowed to party together in Premier matchmaking".
- The update of 6 February 2025, a week into Season Two, "Adjusted the logic that determines when players are too far apart in CS Rating to participate in matchmaking together as a party", adding: "In most cases, players who used to play together as a party in Premier Season One will be able to party together in Premier Season Two."
- The build of 3 October 2025 added the five-stack message, and players report full five-stacks queuing wider since.
So a figure from before February 2025 is out of date for every party, and one from before October 2025 is out of date for five-stacks. The 5,000 most pages repeat is from 2024.
Parties of two to four. Players report, mostly from duos, being refused at around 8,500 to 9,500 apart. One duo at 16,322 and 7,858, 8,464 apart, was refused in March 2026, while players near 9,000 apart report getting in some days and not others.
Full five-stacks. Players report queuing far wider since October 2025: their own five from 8,700 to 21,000, and a five they met as opponents from 16,400 to 30,500. Whether a five has any limit left, Valve hasn't said. The game still carries the plain "too far apart" message beside the five-stack one, so a pair far enough apart may still be refused even as five.
Why the edge moves. Players find the check doesn't always match the numbers on screen, and it appears to use a hidden rating rather than the one shown. That would explain why a party can queue one week and be refused the next after a streak, and it's why the 9,000 is a report, not a rule. Leave room: a party that only just fits can stop fitting after a few matches.
Friends without a CS Rating
A CS Rating shows once a player has won ten Premier matches. That was the rule when Valve recalibrated everyone for Season Two, where every player had "to re-establish their CS Rating by winning 10 matches", and Valve hasn't announced a change since.
Before then, a friend can be refused in two ways:
- Next to a high rating. Valve's launch notes said "players with a very high established CS Rating are not allowed to party with accounts that do not have an established CS Rating". That's the third message above. Valve hasn't said what counts as very high.
- Next to another friend without a rating. Players reported in 2024 and early 2025 being refused when neither showed a rating, a few wins in. They put it down to hidden ratings that were already too far apart.
A rating that has expired from inactivity comes back with one win: "Your CS Rating has expired due to inactivity. Win 1 match to display it again."
Competitive doesn't give a friend a CS Rating, so they win their Premier matches without you, alone or with players in range. Play Competitive together in the meantime.
Competitive and Wingman
Competitive ranks each map on its own, with a Skill Group for each one from Silver I to The Global Elite. In the Season Four update of 21 January 2026, Valve expired every per-map Skill Group, and each shows again "once the player obtains the required number of wins".
Its party check is like Premier's, except that Competitive has no message that turns a five away for its gap. The game's message says a party's Skill Groups can be "too far apart to participate in competitive matchmaking unless you play with a full team of five players", so a full five can queue however far apart its Skill Groups are. As in Premier, a party whose Skill Groups are high can't queue with a player who has none, five or not. Valve gives no distance in either case.
A friend without Prime can still queue Competitive with you. The game says: "Lobby member is not enrolled in Prime. Prime requires all lobby members to be enrolled. This match will use skill-based matchmaking but will not affect players' skill groups or leaderboards." That's the Unranked match the game offers Prime and non-Prime players together, and of Unranked it says: "there are no restrictions on players in your party and your Skill Groups will not be adjusted after the match."
Wingman takes a player alone or a party of two, with a Skill Group of its own, separate from Competitive's.
FACEIT
FACEIT, the third-party platform where CS2 players also play ranked, publishes its party limits. Its CS2 Match Types FAQ says:
- Standard matches, open to everyone, have "no restrictions on party size or party Elo".
- Super Match, for subscribers, takes parties of one to three, and "Premade parties cannot exceed a 400 Elo difference." A party with a player above 2,800 Elo can go wider, at a cost in Elo.
- Premium Match takes parties of one or two, within the same 400 Elo, for subscribers who are Verified and Veteran, in Europe and North America.
So a five of any levels plays FACEIT's Standard matches together.
Who you queue with matters
When a player is banned for cheating, the people who partied with them lose out too. From Valve's launch notes: "When one or more party members get convicted of cheating and permanently banned, all their associates will be penalized with loss of Profile Rank and CS Rating." The game tells the player: "One or more members of your recent parties were convicted of cheating and permanently banned from official Counter-Strike servers. All their associates, including you, have been penalized."
That's a reason to build a steady party rather than queue with whoever is free that night.
Finding players in range
Recruit players whose rating fits everyone in the party, in the roles you're short of, at the hours you play.
Range first. For a party of two to four, keep everyone well inside 9,000, since ratings move after every match. A group that wants players further apart plays as a full five.
Five for the widest range. A full five is the one party that can bring very different ratings together, in Premier since October 2025, by players' reports, and in Competitive by the game's own message.
Roles. A five usually wants an entry fragger, riflers, an AWPer, and players who lurk, support or anchor a site on the CT side, with one of them making the calls. Say which roles you're short of, and whether you need an in-game leader.
Keep a good teammate. After a good match with a stranger, add them on Steam.
From Premier to a team. A five that plays every week can enter ESEA, which joining a CS2 team covers, and How to make an esports team covers keeping a team together.
Post on TeamTavern. Ranked is what most Counter-Strike players on TeamTavern are after: 895 of the 1,049 player posts and 133 of the 183 group posts tick it (TeamTavern's posts, 2020–2026, counted 5 November 2026). Put up a player post with your rating under "Premier rating", your roles, "In-game leader" if you make the calls, your "Competitive skill group", "Wingman rank" and "Faceit level" if you play them, and tick "Ranked" under "Looking for", with Steam or Discord as a contact. A group looking for players puts up a group post with a Premier rating range its party could queue across once the new players join, or says it's building a five.
Then filter the posts by rating and role and message the ones that fit.

Frequently asked questions
How many players are on a CS2 team?
Five, in Premier and Competitive. Both take parties of one to five. Wingman is two against two.
What is the max rating difference to play Premier with friends?
Valve doesn't publish it. Players report that a duo is refused at around 9,000 apart, and that since October 2025 a full five can queue much further apart.
Can you play Premier with 4 people in CS2?
Yes. Valve has allowed parties of four in Premier since 8 November 2023, and gave a solo player matched with a party of four immunity from vote-kicks.
Can you play Premier without Prime?
No. Every player in a Premier party needs Prime status, which is bought, and Profile Rank 10. A friend without Prime can play Competitive with you, but the match is Unranked.
Why can't I play Premier with my unranked friend?
A player whose CS Rating is very high can't party with someone who hasn't established one, which Valve set at ten Premier wins when Season Two began. Players have also reported two friends without a visible rating being refused. Your friend wins their Premier matches without you, and you play Competitive together until their rating shows.
Can a five-stack be any rating in CS2?
In Competitive, a full five can queue however far apart its Skill Groups are, though not with a player who has none if the rest are high. In Premier, players report full fives queuing further apart than smaller parties since October 2025, such as one from 8,700 to 21,000, but Valve hasn't said whether any limit is left.
Find your stack
- In a Premier party of two to four, stay well inside about 9,000 of each other, by players' reports. Valve doesn't publish the number.
- A full five can queue further apart, in Premier since October 2025 by players' reports, and in Competitive by the game's own message.
- Prime and Profile Rank 10 for everyone before Premier.
- A friend without an established rating wins their Premier matches without you, and plays Competitive with you meanwhile.
- Queue with people you trust: a cheater's ban costs the party too.
Post as a player with your Premier rating and tick "Ranked" under "Looking for", or post as a group with a range your party can actually queue across: Counter-Strike 2 players and groups on TeamTavern.
